JAW PAIN AND TMJ DYSFUNCTION

Gentle care for jaw pain, stiffness and TMJ problems, in Carefree on the Cave Creek border. In most cases we can see you the same day.

WHAT IS TMJ DYSFUNCTION?

TMJ disorders cause pain and problems in the jaw joints and the muscles used for chewing. Symptoms include pain in the jaw that can spread to the face or neck, stiffness, a jaw that locks, and painful clicking or popping. About 1 in 20 adults has a TMJ disorder, and it is about twice as common in women.

Many cases improve on their own. The National Institutes of Health recommends starting with simple care that does not permanently change your teeth or jaw.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

My jaw clicks. Do I need treatment?
Not if it does not hurt. Clicking or popping without pain is common and does not need treatment.
Will it go away on its own?
Many TMJ symptoms improve without treatment. Simple care can help while it settles.
Do I need a dentist instead?
Sometimes. We will tell you if your exam suggests you need a dentist or medical doctor.
Should I get a night guard?
Ask your dentist. If you use one and it causes pain, stop using it and let your dentist know.
Can I be seen the same day?
In most cases, yes. Call 480-488-1282, or request an appointment online and we will call you back.
