STIFF AFTER THE LONG DRIVE TO ARIZONA? FIVE WAYS TO LOOSEN UP

Hours in a car or plane can leave your back and neck tight. Here is how to feel better on the way and when you arrive.

Every fall, winter visitors arrive after long drives and flights. Sitting for hours in the same position is hard on the lower back, hips and neck, and many people feel it for a few days after they arrive.

Five things that help

  1. Stop and move. On a road trip, get out every couple of hours and walk for a few minutes.
  2. Set up your seat. Sit back in the seat with your knees about level with your hips, and keep the steering wheel close enough that you are not reaching.
  3. Support your lower back. A small rolled towel or cushion behind your lower back can help on long stretches.
  4. Drink water. Arizona air is dry, and staying hydrated helps you feel better overall.
  5. Walk it off. When you arrive, a gentle walk usually beats lying down for the rest of the day.

When to call

If stiffness lasts more than a few days, or you have pain running down a leg or arm, get it checked. We see visitors all season, and in most cases we can see you the same day. See care for winter visitors.
