PLANTAR FASCIITIS AND HEEL PAIN

Care for stubborn heel pain, including shockwave therapy, in Carefree on the Cave Creek border.

WHAT IS PLANTAR FASCIITIS?

Plantar fasciitis is irritation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. The classic sign is sharp heel pain with your first steps in the morning or after sitting. It is most common between ages 40 and 60, and it often follows new or increased activity, long hours standing on hard surfaces, or tight calf muscles.

Most people get better with simple care. More than 9 in 10 improve within about 10 months of starting simple treatment.

WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME

  • Cut back on the activities that make it worse, and switch to lower-impact options for a while
  • Stretch your calves and the bottom of your foot every day
  • Roll your foot over a frozen water bottle for about 20 minutes, a few times a day
  • Wear cushioned, supportive shoes and avoid going barefoot on hard floors
  • Ask about heel pads, inserts or a night splint

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is heel pain worst first thing in the morning?
The tissue under the foot tightens overnight. Your first steps stretch it suddenly, which causes the sharp pain. It usually eases as you move.
How many shockwave sessions will I need?
Most people need 4 to 8 sessions, about 15 minutes each, and many notice a difference after just a few. We recommend a plan after your exam and check progress as you go.
Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?
No. Shockwave therapy is a self-pay service. Call us and we will explain the options.
Can I keep walking, hiking or playing pickleball?
Usually with changes. Cutting back on the activities that hurt and switching to lower-impact exercise for a while gives the tissue a chance to settle.
When should I get my heel checked?
If pain lasts more than a few weeks despite home care, if it started with an injury, or if you have numbness, swelling or pain at night.
